MARGAO: A fine brace from Benson Fernandes helped St Anthony’s SC, Assolda thump Varca Sports Club 4-1 to enter the quarter-finals of the 14th All Goa Guirdolim Panchayat Cup, at Chandor ground, on Sunday.
Both the teams started on a cautious note and play was mostly restricted to the midfield, but it was Assolda who looked the better of the two sides. Both teams were locked 0-0 at half time.
Post resumption in the 42nd minute a powerful shot by Benson Fernandes from the top of the box beat the Varca goalkeeper. The cheers from the crowd had hardly died down that Vicky Fernandes’ shot on goal was handled by a Varca defender and the referee awarded a penalty kick. Kevin Vaz of Assolda scored in the 45th minute to make it 2-0.
Vicky once again assisted Cajitan Fernandes in the 54th minute, who scored of an easy tap-in to make it 3-0. Jhonus D’Costa pulled a goal back for Varca in the 56th minute.
In the 70th minute of the match, Benson Fernandes hammered the last nail in Varca’s coffin by scoring his second goal with another long range shot from the center with the Varca goalkeeper helplessly out of position.
