St Antonio Warriors, Mapusa emerge State hockey champs

MARGAO: St Antonio Warriors, Guirim-Mapusa emerged winners of the State hockey championship, defeating Majorda Hockey Club, 5-3 in the sudden death, at Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs ground, Seraulim, recently.
Both the teams played 1-1 during the normal time.
Pranit Naik took the lead for the Majorda Hockey Club in the 32nd minute, but in the last quarter the hard working Pandu made several attempts to find the equalising goal but the rival keeper Rajesh Salgaonkar was brilliant under the bar pulling off stunning saves.
But in the 45th minute, Sushas managed to hit the back of Majorda goal to get the much needed equaliser for Mapusa team.
In the ensuring tie-breaker, the deadlock could not be established, hence sudden death was to be restored, with Rohit, Subham and Pandu finding the board, while Gawrav Nnembelkar and Kesheal Megtal scored for the Majorda Hockey Club.
Goalkeepeer Mandar was the hero during the tie-breaker who brought three saves and helped Antoino Warriors to clinch the senior men’s hockey championship to Mapusa.
In the senior, women section, Curzon Society Bastora made light work of Navelim Hockey Club defeating them by 10-0 goals.
The scorers were Manjitha Muttekar, Prarnail Naik and Lavita Naik who shared the goals among themselves.
Nelly Rodrigues ZP Members Colva Constituency was the chief guest and distributed trophies and certificates to the players in the presence of Anjulo P Fernandes, Vice-President, Goan Hockey Association, Benny Veigas, Secretary Goan Hockey and other dignitaries.
