AMBELIM: St Rock YC, Majorda scored a fluent 3-1 win over Ambelim Sports Club, in the ongoing Lourdes Soccer Cup, organised by Ambelim SC, at Ambelim ground, on Monday.
It was Ambelim SC, who started the match brightly and nearly took the lead in the second minute but Samson Simoes’ header hit the upright and went out of play.
Riding on the home crowd, the host club kept on mounting pressure to score the first goal, but were stunned in the 15th minute when St Rock YC took a surprise lead as they found the net through Kevin Almeida from a counter attack.
Down by goal, Ambelim kept knocking at the rival citadel. Samson missed another sitter when he failed to guide in a cross sent in from his teammate and then Leslie saw his shot hit the cross bar and go out of play.
Ambelim SC keeper Benny Silva pulled off a stunning save in the 26th minute to deny Majorda their second goal.
However, Benny could do little to stop Roygen Pereira’s long range shot as the striker inflated Majorda’s lead.
At the other end, Ambelim kept on trying to get back into the game and finally were awarded a penalty after a Majorda defender handled the ball in the box. Leslie stepped over and coolly converted from the spot kick to get his team back into the game.
Just as Ambelim SC were trying to find the equaliser, Roygen completed his brace and scored the team’s third to make it 3-1.
