PANJIM: St Xavier’s College, Mapusa was declared the best college in sports for the academic year 2014-15 by the Goa University’s Sports Awards on the occasion of the Goa University Foundation day, at the Goa University campus, Taleigao plateau, on Tuesday.
Sushmeeta Vasta, who is a research scholar at the Goa University was declared the Best Sportswoman and Vincy Fernandes of Government College, Quepem was adjudged the Best Sportsman.
The awards were presented by chief guest Prof. DB Phatak, IIT Mumbai in the presence of Vice Chancellor Dr SR Shetye.
St Xavier’s College, Mapusa were winners in table tennis (men), basketball (men), table tennis (women), judo (women), football (women), swimming (women), volleyball (women), baseball (women). They secured five points each for a top spot in every discipline and totaled 40 points.
St Xavier’s were runners-up in handball (men), kho kho (men), athletics (women) and hockey (women) to garner a total of 52 points.
The Best Sportswoman Sushmeeta Vasta put a commendable performance in which she won a gold medal in 1m diving at the All-India Inter-University Aquatics in Bangaluru. She also finished fourth in the 3m diving event.
Vincy Fernandes put up an all-round performance for Government College Quepem where he secured a gold medal in 800m and 1500m athletics at the Inter Collegiate Athletics and also won the team event.
He won the silver medal in 4x400m, individual bronze medal in cross country Inter-Collegiate Championship and was the runner-up in the team event.
Vincy also represented Goa University at the All-India Inter University Cross Country Championship in Kerala and Athletics Championship in Mangalore.
He secured a silver medal at the Inter Collegiate Cross Country race organized by Fr Agnel College, Pilar.
He won the hockey, stood runner-up in cycling and took his college team to the quarter-finals in football.
