PANJIM: St Xavier’s College, Mapusa won the best college in sports for men and women for the year 2015-16 at the 32nd Foundation Day programme of Goa University held at the campus, Taleigao Plateau, recently.
The Best Sportswoman was won by Micheal Casthana of Government College, Quepem and Akshay Velip of C.E.S. College, Cuncolim won the Best Sportsman Award.
St Xavier’s College in the girl’s category was the winners in judo, football, hockey, volleyball (4×5=20), runners-up in table tennis and athletics (2×3=6) they secured a total of 26 points.
However, in the men’s category they were the winners in table tennis, basketball, handball and hockey (4×5= 20) while runners-up in football and kho-kho (2×3=06) and secured an overall of 26 points.
Micheal was selected to represent India in football at the South Asian Games, 21st Senior Women National West Zone Football Championship in Jabalpur and also captained Goa University team at the West Zone Inter University football at Ahmedabad.
Akshay to his credit bagged gold at the 3rd Asian Kho-Kho Championsip held at Indore, represented Goa in the 49th Senior Nation Kho-Kho Championship at Solapur.
The awards were presented by the chief guest Director, National Institute of Technology, Goa Dr G.R.C. Reddy in the presence of Vice Chancellor Dr S.R. Shetye and Registrar Prof. Y.V. Reddy.
