PANJIM: A fine brace by striker Milagres Fernandes helped Curtorim Gymkhana blank Navelim Villagers Union 3-0 to lift the Snow’s Cup all-Goa inter-village football tournament, organized by Snow’s Football Academy, Raia at the Panchayat ground, Raia, on Sunday. There was no score at half time.
Curtorim Gymkhana enjoyed the better share of exchanges in both the session and kept the crowds on their toes but their forwards were rusty after reaching the rival danger zone.
At the other end, Navelim Villagers Union took time to settle down but failed to get past the rival rearguard.
Curtorim Gymkhana had a couple of scoring opportunities to wrap up the match but striker Milagres Fernandes fumbled at the rival goal mouth.
Curtorim Gymkhana came back strongly after change of ends with their forwards and midfielders working in tandem to put the rival defence under tremendous pressure.
Milagres Fernandes put his team in front after resumption. Soon, Milagres doubled the lead with a deft placement.
Down by two goals, Navelim Villagers made concentrated efforts but striker Sukhdev Arwade’s effort missed the mark narrowly. Agnelo Martins drove the last nail into the rival coffin late in the second half.
Curtorim Gymkhana were richer by Rs 30,000 and a glittering trophy while Navelim Villagers had to settle for Rs 20,000.
Former footballers from Raia Mario Rodrigues, Neves Oliveira, Agnelo Cardozo, Joao Abel Gaonkar, Orlando Deus, Pedro Godinho, Luis Quadros, Joao Domingo Gomes, Rosario Fernandes, Custodio Rodrigues, Minguel Fernandes, Inacio Quadros, Menino Gomes, Francisco D’Souza, Gabriel Gomes, Santan Dias, Inacio Oliveira, Seby Oliveira, Neri Mendes and Mathew Colaco were felicitated.
Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of Sporting Clube de Goa President Peter Vaz; GFA President Elvis Gomes, GFA Vice-President (South) Schubert Furtado and other dignitaries.
