PANJIM: Taleigao Youth and Calvim Youth emerged champions in the boys 7-a-side football and 3-aside girls tie-breaker finals respectively in the Fellowship Cup, an inter-parish youth football tournament filled with excitement, teamwork and the spirit of togetherness organised by Aldona Parish Youth, recently.
Moira were the runners-up in the 7-a-side football and 3-a-side girls tie-breaker.
“Football is the beautiful game. It has the potential to unite people and teach values,” inspired by these words of Pope Francis, the main goal of the tournament was to bring the youth together to play, pray and build friendships, focusing on unity rather than competition.
Guided by Parish Priest Fr Tomas Lobo and Youth Animator Fr Agnel Simoes, the tournament was smoothly coordinated and turned out to be a great success, with great enthusiasm youth from 12 parishes participating.
The match commenced with a prayer offered by each team, followed by an exchange of potted plants bearing biblical verses, reflecting the Jubilee Year’s theme of Hope, Faith and Spiritual Growth. Chief guest was former Assistant Director of Physical Education and Sports, Goa University, Milton Fernandes and graced by Fr Tomas Lobo, Aldona MLA Adv Carlos Alvares Ferreira, Collin and Fr Jerard Sahayaraj.
A special highlight was the exhibition match between the Veterans of Aldona and Priests from various parishes, in which the priests emerged winners. The energetic Aldona Youth also presented a lively flash mob performance. The officials, Cosme Ferrao, Celrich DeAlmeida and Keegan Fernandes, did a commendable job in ensuring fair and smooth matches.
