Viraj score a cent percent score winning all nine games. Playing scintillating chess right from the first round, Viraj employed his pet English opening and won against Chincholimath Halsagar (1979) of Karnatak in the last round in 43 moves to take home Rs 18,000 and the trophy.
K R Madhusoodan (1949) of Kerala gatecrashed through the defences of Nikam Ravindra (1922) of
Mohammed Dilshad (1828) of Kerala could not keep up pace with his Trompowsky opening and went down fighting to D. Ashraf Subhani (1958) of AP.
