PANJIM: Tournament favorite Tejas Shevde won the Men’s singles final of the Clube Tennis de Gaspar Dias Open 2016 in a thrilling match against Gustavo Perziano at Clube Tennis de Gaspar Dias, Mira Mar, on Sunday.
Playing at the brand new blue courts at the club, Tejas and Gustavo played out an entertaining match of tennis. With the crowds behind him, Tejas came out with his A game for the final and won 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 to defeat Gustavo.
All through the tournament Tejas and Gustavo had played sublime tennis and it was apt for these two magnificent players to be in the final. After his win said Tejas, “It was one of the best games I have played. Gustavo is a tough player and I knew it would be difficult but I gave it my all.”
The popular Women’s singles category saw Charmaine Godinho take on Simran Khan in the final. Both played a good match as Simran overpowered Charmaine to win 6-2, 6-3 . On her way to the final Simran played some of her best tennis to defeat Manuela Gomes and Shirley. With another title to her name Simran now looks forward to the next tournaments. “I feel great to have won the final. It was absolutely amazing to win on these new courts at Clube Tennis de Gasper Dias. It was a tough match but I felt confident of winning it,” said Simran.
In the Men’s doubles category, the pairing of Tejas and Bulu won comfortably defeating Santosh and Gustavo 6-2, 6-3. Tejas with his second title of the tournament had paired up with Bulu for the Men’s doubles and the pairing was perfect as both understood each other.
In the veteran doubles category, Kevin and Sadguru took down Noel and Manoj in a fiercely fought match 6-1, 5-7, (10-7). Noel Noronha won in the veterans singles category against Prema Sherpa 6-3, 5-3. Noel suffered an injury in the final set of the match, two points short of winning. As play couldn’t resume due to Noel’s injury, Sherpa displayed a sporting spirit and conceded the match.
The final of the U-16 Boy’s category saw Vardhan Karkal triumphant over Jaybhaye Ramkishan winning 6-1, 6-0 on Saturday while over in the Girl’s U-16 category Ibtisam Shaikh won against Saumya Sukhthankar to claim the Clube Tennis de Gasper Dias Open 2016 trophy.
The U-12 category of Boys and Girls put up a splendid performance in the tournament and are future stars in their own right. In the U-12 Boy’s, Arnav Oruganty won the final defeating Felix Craven 4-0,4-0 while in the U-12 Girl’s category, Rutuja Prabhudessai defeated Simran Bundela 4-0,4-0 to win the final.
Clube Tennis de Gaspar Dias, President, Yogesh Nadkarni and Secretary, Rajesh Khaunte alongwith GSTA President, Nathan Chowgule and Arjun Gadre, MD, Gadre Premium Seafood gave away the trophies to the winners at the award ceremony held immediately after the final.
Yogesh Nadkarni said, “It has been a pleasure watching the matched played out over the past week. We have seen some phenomenal performances on the court from players and even more so to watch the future stars of tennis in Goa. We thank everyone involved in organizing this tournament for their wholehearted participation.”
Clube Tennis de Gaspar Dias Open 2016 commenced with a total of 122 entries coming in across 10 categories. The tournament was organized in partnership with Goa State Tennis Association (GSTA) and Gadre Premium Seafood. Clube Tennis de Gaspar Dias Open 2016 will be an annual fixture on the state’s tennis calendar.
