MARGAO: A brilliant second half strike by striker Claudio Dias helped United Club of Telaulim (UCT) to overcome Maina Sports Club 1-0 and emerge champions in SWC Zaino Cup inter-village football tournament organised by Sports Welfare Club of Zaino, at Zaino ground, Velim.
Maina SC gave a good account of themselves with better ball possession and chances. However, they could not find a way through the Telaulim defence.
The match looked evenly poised with both the teams creating chances but failing to convert them. However, a wonder strike from 30 yards by Claudio was enough to win the match for Telaulim.
Maina tried hard to get back into the match but failed to create clear cut opportunities.
United Club of Telaulim were awarded Rs 40,000 and a trophy while Maina Sports Club had to settle for Rs 30,000 and a trophy.
The following individual prizes were awarded: Best player Wilton Gomes, Best player of the tournament Alvito Colaco, First scorer of the final Claudio Dias, all of UC Telaulim.
Benjamin Silva, Velim MLA and chairman of KVIC was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of guest of honour Fr Jorge Pazzi Fernandes, Parish Priest, St Xavier’s Church, Velim and Melwyn Sanches sarpanch of VP Velim.
Earlier, Lewis Andrade, president of SWC, Zaino welcomed the guests while Gurudas Kudalkar, secretary of SWC compered and proposed the vote of thanks.
