PANJIM: The King’s School, Sao Jose de Areal, started their campaign with a solitary goal win over Government Senior Secondary School, Sikkim, in the junior girls category group stage match of the 63rd Subroto Cup International Football Tournament played in New Delhi, on Tuesday.
The all-important goal was scored by Valaina Fernandes in the second half. The victory is commendable considering the fact that the Sikkim team was a ‘Senior/Higher Secondary School’, while the The King’s School is a high school team.

Post match, Coach Christian Roldan said, “We knew that the first match would be difficult, due to the high level of the opponents and the pressure that our players would feel in their debut match in a competition of this magnitude. The team has shown that it knows how to work and compete even when the circumstances are against us. We always work on all the aspects that can be improved, and of course today we also want to analyse and work to improve aspects of our game.”
The King’s School will play its next match against a team from Bangladesh on Wednesday.
When asked about the upcoming match strategy, Roldan said that first it was important to recover physically after Tuesday’s tremendous effort, as the team had just over 20 hours until the next game.”
“We are up against a great opponent with great goal scoring ability. The team must once again work hard defensively and remain compact in all phases of the game, both in defence and attack,” the coach added.
