VASCO: Trisha Verlekar won a double crown while Ruchi Kirtani, Reshan Sheikh, Aaron Farias and Anshuman Agarwal were the other title winners, at the 36th Salgaocar All Goa Major Ranking Table Tennis Tournament organised by Cortalim Gymkhana in collaboration with Goa Table Tennis Association, at Salgaocar Hall, Vasco.
Trisha Verlekar was in fine nick as she breezed past Leoma Fernandes with identical 3 – 0 margins to win the Cadet and Sub Junior Girls singles titles with her opponent emerging as runner up in both these categories.
In mini cadet girls, Ruchi Kirtani was in cruise control against Anvi Nadkarni whom she defeated with a facile 3 -0 margin. The match of the day was the mini cadet boys singles between Reshan Shaikh and Atharv Dhulapkar, a see saw battle with fortunes fluctuating from set to set. With both the players trading two sets a piece, it was Reshan who came up triumphant in the end, edging past Atharv in a tight 3 – 2 contest. The cadet boys finals was a similar exciting tussle with Aaron Farias prevailing over Khushal Naik. He won 3-1.
Anshuman Agarwal and Nagesh Verenker, two top Goa players and fierce opponents, battled it out for the Sub Junior Boys Crown. Both boys who have a high India ranking exhibited a fine array of shots to keep the spectators glued to their seats. Anshuman started aggressively to go to a healthy 2 sets lead. Nagesh pulled things back in the third set to keep his opponent on the tenterhooks and make it a contest. The fourth set was a tight and thrilling battle which could have gone either way. However, Nagesh failed to capitalize on his chances to go down fighting 1 – 3 to his opponent Anshuman.
Ashwin Kumar Nayak, General Manager, Legal & Estate, V M Salgaocar & Bro Pvt Ltd., Vishnu Kolwalkar and Sudin Verenker, Vice Presidents (GTTA) & Shyam Keni (Organising Secretary) graced the closing function. Following are the finals results:
