PANJIM: After being elected unopposed for two consecutive terms as Goa Olympic Association (GOA) General Secretary,  Gurudatta Bhakta faces a challenge in his race for third consecutive term as Goa Badminton Association Secretary Sandeep Heble has filed his nomination for the same.
“I am contesting the elections as I believe I can contribute to carry the Sports movement in Goa forward. I have filed my nomination for two posts, Secretary General and Vice President, in the Executive Council of Goa Olympic Association,” said Sandeep Heble in a press statement.
“Panel politics is not healthy for the growth of the game. G.O.A, I believe, must have a larger role to play other than restricting itself to National Games and Lusofonia,” he added.
“Whosoever is actively involved and has the time, passion and commitment to carry the objects of the Olympic movement forward, I believe they need to be encouraged. Over last many years, I have been involved in multiple sports, have been part of organising committees in those bodies and enjoy good friendly relations with them all,” he explained.
Meanwhile GFA General Secretary Welvin Menezes has also filed his nomination to be part of the executive council.
When contacted GOA Gen Sec, Bhakta said, “Sports Code isn’t applicable to us. The State government nor IOA ordered us or advised. It has come as directive from the state government as advisory. So it’s not adopted and we are going by the GOA constitution”
When asked about his views on the sports code, Bhakta added, “It’s definitely good. If tomorrow the general body decides that we need to adopt it we can go ahead with it.
