VARCA: United Club of Benaulim edged past Ambelim Sports Club 5-4 via tie-breaker to move into the quarter-finals of Varca Panchayat Cup football tournament organised by Varca Sports Club at Varca ground, on Thursday.
At half time, both teams failed to open an account.
From the start, teams played an attacking game, United Club of Benaulim’s Keagan Fernandes had a chance to score first but his shot was well saved by Aliston Pinto.
Soon after Ambelim Sports Club also missed a chance to score through Jeniton D’Silva. With goalkeeper at his mercy, Jeniton shot wide from a close range.
As the play progressed, teams tried their best to score but all their efforts were in vain as both the goalkeepers stood like a rock under the cross bar.
At the end of regulation time, the score was 0-0.
In the ensuing tie-breaker, United Club of Benaulim scored through Osbourne Fernandes, Faisal Bepari, Claudson Goes,Sydroy Baptista and Roslly Fernandes while Ambelim Sports Club converted through Vishal Aralkar, Perryson Fernandes, Jeniton and Clens Pinto.
Keegan Fernandes of United Club of Benaulim bagged the man-of-the-match award.
