RAIA: UC Benaulim recorded a solitary goal victory over Carmona SC to enter the quarter-finals of Cana-Benaulim Panchayat Cup football tournament played at St John de Baptista ground, Benaulim, on Thursday.
Within five minutes of the start, UC Banaulim would have scored the opening goal but a fine cross from right by Joseburn Cardozo was shot over crossbar by striker Keegan Fernandes from inside the box. Carmona SC then slowly came back into the match and came close to get the goal from the efforts of Dezwin Dias and Maven Gracias.
After the breather, Keegan got himself inside the box and struck a left footer which was punched out by goalkeeper Aaren Fernandes, who had a fantastic outing, made another fine save of Joseburn Cardozo. The host were persistent with their attack and finally got the much eluded goal in the 52nd minute when Keegan’s through pass was not intercepted by Carmona SC defender Stanford Fernandes allowing Joeburn to put the ball into the net.
In the dying minutes, Shanon Furtado of Carmona SC saw his shot going just wide of the mark to the dismay of the teammates. Carmona SC goalkeeper Aaren Fernandes was adjudged as the man-of-the-match and was handed a trophy by Benaulim Sarpanch Xavier Pereira.
