MARGAO: A second half strike by Denzil Fernandes helped Uguem Rising Club, Sanguem overcome Betalbatim Sporting Club 1-0 in an absorbing final and clinch the All Goa Chinchinim Villagers Venturas International Network Silver Jubilee Cup inter-village football tournament organized by Union of Chinchinim Villagers, at church ground, Chinchinim, on Sunday.
There was no score at lemon break.
In an evenly contested match, both the teams displayed attacking brand of soccer and kept the Sunday crowd on their toes. Both had equal number of scoring chances but the defenders were tall in protecting the citadel intact.
Crossing over, the teams showed urgency as a result there were few thrills at either end. However, Uguem Rising Club slowly took over the control and fired couple of pot shots against the rival citadel. The deadlock was broken midway in the second half when striker Denzil slotted past the rival goalkeeper with snap shot.
With the setback, Betalbatim went all out in search of equalizer but failed to get past the rival rearguard.
Winners Uguem Rising Club received Rs 30,000 and a trophy while the Betalbatim Sporting Club had to settle with Rs 22,000 and a trophy.
The following individual prizes were awarded: First scorer Denzil, best goalkeeper Milton, best defender Trisinaio, Best forward Johnson, all Uguem Rising Club and Best half Leston Fernandes (Betalbatim).
Deputy Chief Minister Francis D’Souza was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of guests of honour Fisheries Minister Avertano Furtado, Director of Venturas International Networks Cedrick Jordan Da Silva, Parish priest of Our Lady of Hope Church, Chinchinim Fr Jose Antonio Costa and Bicholim Constituency MLA Naresh Sawal and Velim Constituency MLA Benjamin Silva presided.
In all 16 teams participated.
