United Goa Marathon attracts huge interests

PANJIM: The countdown has begun for the United Goa Marathon to be held on November 14 at Campal ground, here.

The opening race will be flagged off at 6.30 a.m. by Rev. Fillipe Neri Farrao, the Archbishop of Goa and Daman, who is also the chief patron.
Jude D’Souza, (National Secretary of AICU), the architect of this event found able support from Mr. Edwin Fonseca, President of CA and Brig. Ian da’ Costa to help encourage our various communities of Goa to unite and to improve inter-communion relationship between our various communities in a spirit of brotherhood, love and goodwill 
The men’s marathon race will be of 24 km and 14 km for women, while shorter races have been designed to cater to both men and women, young and old of various ages. It also includes brisk walking for elderly and a race for the physically challenged, beside a race for the Special Olympic Children. The other aims were to improve the general health of our population. 
Most schools, colleges and institutions/organizations are taking an active part in this unique event. The Archbishop of Goa and Daman is the chief patron while Peter Vaz, the Chairman of Models Group along with Ranjit Cotta Carvalho, Managing Director (Golden Sands) are the patrons actively supporting this event.
The winner of the Men’s 24 km race will win the biggest prize money of Rs 1,00,000 while the winner of the Women’s 14 km race will win a prize money of Rs 50,000. Specially designed glass trophies for the successful winners of races across all categories and custom design certificates for participants will be the high light of the award ceremony.
The main races will start at 6.30 a.m. sharp from Campal ground due to constraint of traffic control at Ribandar road.
