PANJIM: Hosts Vagator Parish Youth Sports Club had to wait for the penalty shootout before they got the better of Holy Cross Sports Club, Arambol 5-3 to seal their place in the final of Mc Dowell No. 1 Yaari Premier Cup, at Ozran ground, Vagator, on Thursday. There was no score at full time.
In a well contested semis, the teams played almost on equal footing, though the visitors Arambol had better scoring opportunities.
Vagator’s Sameer Govekar sent a perfect floater to well positioned Myron Dias in the eighth minute, but the latter shot into the hands of the onrushing keeper.
In the 20th minute, Arambol were awarded a penalty by the referee after Vagator defender Akshay Vengurlekar tackled Amit inside the penalty box. However Vagator keeper Mohan saved Amit Fernandes’ spot-kick.
On crossing ends, Vagator defender Akshay who came with a timely goal line clearance to stop Jaison and Amit combined efforts.
Another chance was squandered by Arambol as Cedric Rodrigues failed to give finishing touches to a superb through pass by Hemant Rodrigues.
At the other end Sameer Govekar sent a fine cross to Shekar Kerkar whose volley missed the target narrowly.
To decide the winners the penalty shootout was implemented where for Vagator colts Nitesh, Shekar, Akshay, Lester and Aniket scored on target, while for Arambol side Amit, Sunny, and Vithal scored.
