MAPUSA: Valpoi Sports Club halted Super Goans SC winning run, as they registered a 7-6 win via sudden death to enter the semi-finals of the GFA’s Third Division Play-Off played at Duler Stadium, here, on Sunday.
The teams were locked in a 3-3 draw at the end of the regulation time. Valpoi colts struck thrice before the breather with Abdul Khan netting a brace and striker Zaid Khan adding his name to the scorers list.
On crossing ends, Sangam Pednekar netted a brace with Soham Nagvekar scoring Super Goans the third goal.
Valpoi SC dominated the first session while on resumption of play Super Goans held the upper hand.
After couple of missed chances, Valpoi SC colts opened their account in the 20th minute when Abdul Khan combined with Sujeet Gaonkar to finish with a stiff grounder 1-0.
Just two minutes later Super Goans should have levelled terms but Cyprian Rodrigues 25-yard strike rebounded off the crossbar.
At the half an hour mark, Valpoi SC’s Nakul Gawas sent an intelligent through pass to overlapping Zaid Khan who beat onrushing Super Goans goalkeeper Dietmar Fernandes with a neat placement 2-0.
Super Goans had two chances to reduce the margin but first Dalesh Pednekar placement went out while minutes later his power packed right footer was blocked for a corner by Valpoi custodian Yogendra Narvekar at the first post.
In the 42nd minute, Valpoi SC pumped in their third goal when Abdul Khan collected a pass from Sujeet and latched a hot-blooded shot which took a wicked deflection off Super Goans defender Ashley Fernandes and the ball rolled into the goal 3-0.
In the added time, Vidhesh Sawant’s free-kick was collected by Valpoi SC’s custodian Avaiz Khan.
On crossing ends, Super Goans pinned their opponents inside their own territory to find Sangam Pednekar score two quick goals through superb headers while Soham Nagvekar pumped in the equaliser in the dying minutes of extra time, 3-3.
In the penalty shootout, Valpoi SC proved to be better shooters to win the match by 4-3 margin to book their place into the semis. Valpoi SC’s goalkeeper Yogendra Narvekar received the man-of-the-match award from Darling Meccan, GFA’s Women’s Committee member.
