MARGAO: Varca Sports Club came from behind to defeat Maina Sports Club 5-3 via the tie-breaker to enter the quarter-finals of all-Goa Verna Panchayat Cup inter-village football tournament, organized by Verna Sports Club, at Verna ground, Tuesday.
In an evenly poised battle, the teams showed urgency right from the kick off with Maina Sports Club taking the lead in the 11th minute when striker Clifford Carneiro slotted past the rival goalkeeper with snap shot.
Unfazed, Varca took control of the match and neutralized the lead in the 13th minute when Nigel Pereira punished the rival goalkeeper with neat finish.
Crossing over, the teams adopted offensive approach as a result the play was confined to midfield and there were few thrills at either end.
In the ensuing penalty shoot out, Vilroy D’Cruz, Columban Noronha, Elvis Fernandes, Quadros Fernandes found the mark for Varca while Edwin Sequeira and Clifford Carneiro scored for Maina.
