Varca SC in semis

BENAULIM: Varca Sports Club defeated Navelim Villagers Union 2-1to enter the semi-final of the 12th Bebe Costa Memorial inter-village football tournament, organized by United Club of Benaulim, at St John the Baptist ground, Benaulim on Saturday.

Varca’s Joylan Cardozo scored the match-winner after Jonas Costa equalised Navelim’s early lead scored through Alvito Colaco.
Navelim surged ahead in the 25th minute as Alvito Colaco reacted quickest when rival keeper Carmo Rebello’s spilled Sandy Colaco’s harmless cross right infront of the goal.
Down by a goal, Varca lads went all out in search of the equalizer and scored in the 36th minute when experienced midfielder Elvis Fernandes played a brilliant aerial pass to Jonas Costa, who outran his maker and slammed the ball past the helpless Navelim keeper Delwin Costa.
Goaded by the goal, Varca SC stunned their opponents by scoring the second within minutes.  
Midfielder Macklin Mascarenhas caught the Navelim defene napping and played an inch perfect pass to winger Joylan Cardozo, who got past keeper Dalwin with an angular drive.
Thereafter Varca defended in numbers with towering Quolon Alemao and Columban Noronha marshalling the troop.
Mavin Gomes of Navelim Villagers Union was adjudged the man of the match.
