SANGOLDA: Vasco Veterans completed the semi-final line up of the Monte de Guirim Platinum Jubilee Football Tournament with a narrow 1-0 win over Chinchinim Veterans in the quarter-final, played at Sangolda Panchayat ground, on Friday.
Chichinim Veterans with yesteryear stars like Mario Soares, Orlando Viegas and Mahesh Lotlikar in their ranks dictated proceedings from the start, but were kept at bay by a stout Vasco defence marshalled by Nelson Landez, Santan Colaco and Lance Fernandes.
After a scoreless first half and midway through the second half, Vasco surprised their opponents with a flurry of moves.
In one such move Ramesh Palkar released Rosario Carvalho down the right flank and the later covering some ground put in a goal mouth cross for Santan Furtado tap in at the far post for what proved to be the match winner for his team
Though Chinchinim laid seize to the rival goal and came close to finding the elusive equaliser a number of times, Vasco clung on to their precious lead to set up a semi-final meeting with tournament favourites Bardez Veterans on November 4.
The second semi-final between Joe Cookies Loutolim and Albert Developers is scheduled for the following day November 5.
