Velson carves out victory for Maina

MARGAO: A superb brace by striker Velson Fernandes enabled Maina Sports Club to carve out a fluent 3-1 victory over Clube Sao Miguel de Taleigao and advance into the semi-finals of all-Goa St Sebastian Union Club inter-village football tournament organized by St Sebastian Union Club, Benaulim, at St John the Baptist ground, Dando-Benaulim on Tuesday.

Maina led 2-1 at half time. Maina held the upper hand in both the sessions. Maina took the lead in the 6th minute when Velson bulged the net.
With the setback, Sao Miguel de Taleigao upped the ante and reduced the margin through spot kick after rival defender Manuel Fernandes handle the ball inside the penalty box and Cedric Peixoto made no mistake to convert the resultant spot kick.
Velson, who was in thick of action, struck second time at the stoke of lemon break to complete his brace and give his team 2-1 cushion.
Crossing over, Maina continued to dictate terms and fired couple of pot shots. Joaquim Carvalho put the issue beyond doubt when he placed the ball to the far corner of the net.
