Verna claim Bro Eulalio trophy

Verna Sports Club scored a narrow 1-0 win over Union of Chinchinim Villagers to emerge champs in All-Goa Bro Eulalio Vaz memorial soccer tournament organised by Don Bosco Oratory at Don Bosco Oratory ground, Fatorda on Sunday.
The all-important goal came in the first half through Anthony Rego.
Chinchinim began on an aggressive note with their forwards creating many forays into the rival territory and tested the rival keeper with sorties.
Striker Jorax Fernandes, who was a thorn in the rival defence, unleashed a couple of forays into the rival penalty area and came close to surging ahead but Verna keeper Molly Alvares was a stumbling block as he thwarted a couple of saves to deny Chinchinim success.
The match-winner came midway in the opening session when striker Santan Rego unleashed a blistering shot which beat the Chinchinim keeper all ends up.
Stung by the setback, Chinchinim tried their best to raise the game but their efforts were in vain against a strong defence put up by the Verna lads.
Crossing over, Chinchinim put up a better display but could not breach the Verna defence marshalled by John Fernandes who was alert in frustrating their attacks.
On the other hand, Verna also had scoring chances but their forwards squandered away easy opportunities from close range.
In all 16 teams participated.
Verna were richer by Rs 20,000 while Chinchinim had to settle for Rs 15,000.
Following individual prizes were awarded: First scorer of the finals – Santan Rego (Verna). Best goalkeeper – Molly Alvares (Verna). Best defender – John Fernandes (Verna). Best player of the tournament – Anthony Rego (Verna). Best midfielder of the finals – Shridhar Dabhale (Chinchinim). Up-coming player – Maclister Faleiro (Don Bosco Oratory). Highest scorer of the tournament – Jorax Fernandes (Chinchinim). Best forward – Anthony Rego (Verna). Man-of-the-finals – Vijal Rego (Verna). Oldest player – Roque Carneiro (Maina).
Fr Ian Figueiredo, Provincial, Goa Konkan Province, Don Bosco Salesians, was the chief guest. Vijay Sardessai, general secretary, Goa Pradesh Congress (I) committee was the guest of honour. Fr Figueredo and Sardessai gave away the prizes. Margao Municipal Council councillors, Joseph D’Silva, Tito Cardozo and GFA member Anthony Pango were the special invitees.
Earlier, Fr Kinley D’Costa, Rector, Don Bosco Oratory, Fatorda welcomed. Bro James proposed the vote of thanks.
