Verna SC move into quarters via sudden death

RAIA: Verna Sports Club moved into the quarters of Guirdolim Panchayat Cup defeating Fr Agnelo YSC, Paroda, 5-4 via sudden death in the 17th All Goa Guirdolim Panchayat Cup organised by Guirdolim Club at Chandor church sports complex ground, on Saturday.

The match started with both teams displaying attacking football. Fr Agnelo YSC had the first shot on goal in the 7th minute but Sezvin’s grounder was saved by Jose Silva the Verna keeper, who dived full length to push the ball out for a corner. 

Selvin’s effort in the 12th minute for Fr Agnelo YSC from an acute angle was brilliantly saved by Jose. For Verna SV, Frazer D’Costa missed an easy chance in the 20th minute with only the Fr Agnelo YSC keeper at his mercy. 

At half time, both teams were tied at 0-0.

Changing over, Fr Agnelo YSC took the lead in the 36th minute through Steve Menezes, who scored from a corner kick. In the very next minute, Verna SC restored parity through Andrus John, whose towering header gave no chance to the Fr Agnelo YSC keeper, who mistimed his jump while trying to clear the ball. Although, both teams attacked each other, both defences ensured that no more goals were scored in the regulation time. 

In the ensuing tie-breaker which went to sudden death, Verna SC scored through Andrus, Joyston, Cyrus and Joasle while only Kanchan, Anthony and Salvin Fernandes scored for Fr Agnelo YSC. 

Jose Silva, goalkeeper of Verna SC, who complimented his brilliant keeping during the match and with three saves during the penalty shoot-out was awarded the player-of the Match by Vice President of Guirdolim Club Brian Pereira.
