We must beat Salgaocar: Barreto

KOLKATA, MARCH 31
With Satyajit Chatterjee biting dust for his failure to guide the team to the expectation levels after chucking out Karim Bencherifa in February this year, Mohun Bagan find themselves in deep trouble.
In the five games played in the second phase of the I-League so far, the Kolkata giants have registered as many points after an emphatic start with a 5-1 victory over Chirag United. But since then, the club has succumbed to a new low suffering consecutive defeats to relegation battling Sporting Clube De Goa and Shillong Lajong.
Amidst all this there is one man who still envisions that the clubs could end the season decently if the players give their all and continue to be motivated.
“I feel very bad. If you see our games, the only game where we can say that we really played bad was against Sporting. Even against Shillong Lajong, we had a lot of chances. They won 4-1 and if we could have scored, it could have been eight goals or something.”
“But we have to just carry on,” said Jose Barreto.
The Brazilian has been in the news for his “increasing” interests in the matters of the team and half-time team talks. Barreto opines that it was done in good spirit and to allow Satyajit to come in and mix well with the team.
“I was only trying to help as the new coach came in. The idea was to motivate them but many players didn’t understand. Satto (Satyajit) is a good gentle guy. I believe that some players used it to get too much free and that has cost us,” pointed the experienced striker.
With eight games to go, Barreto believes that the side only needs to win one game to get back on track and that the players mustn’t give up so soon.
“If the competitive spirit goes, then it’s becomes very difficult. The attitude to compete always has to be maintained and that comes with experience,” he added.
Former Mohun Bagan coach Karim Bencherifa shall return to the City of Joy to take on his former wards on April 10 and Barreto has already outlined his objective for the match.
“We have to win against Salgaocar. I am preparing for that game and it will be one of my best matches in the I-League,” said Barreto with a chuckle for the most obvious reasons.
