MAPUSA: Goa’s top paddler Wesley Do Rosario scripted a fantastic 4-1 upset win over Jeet Chandra, in the 4th Invitational Table Tennis Tournament organised by Miramar Sports Club in collaboration with Goa TT Association and the Sports Authority of Goa, at multipurpose hall, Peddem-Mapusa, on Friday.
Wesley sealed his place in the semi finals with a clinical 11-7, 11-5, 11-9, 5-11, 11-9 win over his opponent, ranked as number 3 in India in the Youth category.
In the other quarter-finals clash, Soumyajit Ghosh, the top draw in this championship and one of the hot favourites to lift the title looked a bit rusty in the opening set but picked up momentum to dispose off India’s number 35 Shreyas Telang in quick time after a marathon first game. He won 15-13, 11-9, 11-8, 11-7.
Ronit Bhanja, India Youth number 4, likewise showcased his class by outclassing Akash Gupta with a fine and agressive display of top class game to enter the semi-finals.
Akash had no answers to his opponent’s fast forehand topspins and strong backhand counters as he succumbed to a facile 4-0 (11-7, 11-2, 11-8, 11-8) loss.
Arjun Ghosh, another top Indian player ranked number 6, got into his elements quickly to put it across Anirban Sinha Roy 4-1.
Though he lost one set, he looked in complete command while registering a 11-6, 3-11, 11-4, 11-3, 11-6 win to enter the last four.
In the semi-finals, Arjun Ghosh will face the two time Olympian Soymyajit Ghosh in what promises to be a super exciting clash.
In the other semi finals, India number 4 Ronit Baneja will face the challenge of home favourite Wesley Do Rosario.
