PANJIM: Wilred Sports Club, Curtorim will challenge CRC Chinchinim in the finals of All-Goa Matanhy memorial inter-village football tournament organized by Velsao Villagers Association on Sunday. In the last semi-final at Dr T B Cunha complex, Cansaulim, they surprised Verna Sporting 6-5 in a fast paced encounter.
Verna Sporting went into the attacking mode but Necesidade Moniz’s shot off Richard Dias went abegging. In the 5th minute Verna’s medio Ajay Satorkar initiated a move which found Samson Menezes who squared it to Richard Dias whose first time shot from close bulged the nets.
Wilred played robust football and following a dangerous move, Sertorio Monterio was tripped by Verna defender Samson. Referee Frankey Fernandes immediately awarded the penalty and flashed the yellow card. Bruno Fernandes calmly shot home to equalize.
In the second half, Verna did most of the attacking and backed by their vocal supporters, but failed to score. Ajay Satorkar who had a good game was distinctly unlucky to see his try rebound off the crossbar.
In the tie-breaker, Wilred Curtorim converted all five kicks through Bruno Fernandes, Anthony Cardozo, Peter Pereira, Vicky Cardozo and Mario Mascarenhas. Myron Fernandes, Vijal Rego, Stanley Pereira and Isidorio Mello converted for Verna. Bazileo Rego failed to score.
