MAPUSA: Xetrapal SC, Bardez giants registered a well-deserved 2-0 win over hot favourites United Boys of Ambaulim to clinch the 17th All-Goa Pio Jose Goveia Memorial Trophy football tournament organised by Youth Sports Club, Colvale, at Colvale Church ground, on Monday.
In a largely attended final, Xetrapal SC started earnestly and should have surged ahead in the 10th minute of play but Mayrush Naik’s 25-yard free-kick was brilliantly swayed by UB Ambaulim goalkeeper Ibon Fernandes for a corner.
At the other end, Sowell’s strike from outside the penalty box was pushed for a corner by Xetrapal SC custodian Omkar Harmalkar.
After couple of missed chances, Xetrapal SC finally succeeded in the 29th minute when Gaurav Vaingankar header came off the horizontal bar and the ball rolled to Vishank Dharghalkar, whose rasping right footer crashed into the far corner of the goal, 1-0.
Just a minute on crossing ends, Xetrapal SC pumped in their second goal through Kanaya Govekar, who headed the ball home, 2-0.
Chief guest former Tivim MLA Kiran Kandolkar, Guest of Honour St Francis of Assisi Church, Colvale, Parish Priest Fr Arlino D’Mello, Head Coach India National Team U-17 and U-20 Bebiano Fernandes presented the winners trophy and cash prize of Rs1 lakh and runners-up trophy and cash prize of Rs 50,000, in the presence of special invitees Tivim Zilla Parishad member Kavita Kiran Kandolkar, Goa Football Association Executive Committee members Uday Lingudkar and Babli Mandrekar, former GFA executive committee members Anthony Fernandes, Patrick D’Souza and Raju Banaulikar; sarpanch, ward members and secretary of Colvale panchayat.
Adv Dominic Pereira compered and proposed a vote of thanks.
