MAPUSA: Young Boys of Tonca (YBT) halted the winning run of St. Anthony’s SC, Marna-Siolim, with a 6-2 victory in the GFA’s First Division play-off match at Duler stadium, here on Monday.
The large supporters from Siolim returned home crestfallen as their Bardez Zone champs were beaten by Ilhas Zone winners.
Marna, who felt the absence of their first choice goalkeeper and two of their regular players were trailing 2-4 at the breather.
Nestor Dias and Sanket Jotkar netted a brace each for YBT. Marna’s Under- 20 Nathan D’Souza and Sadanand Dabolkar scored a goal each.
When the match was just five minutes, old a rasping 25-yard strike by Nestor Dias crashed into the rival net. Nestor almost netted his brace soon after, but his hot-blooded shot kissed the upright on its way out.
Marna received a jolt in the 18th minute with the sending off of their goalkeeper Sudhin Shirodkar by referee Tejas Nagvenkar for a reckless challenge on YBT’s Dezwin Dias, outside the penalty box. Nestor Dias scored from resultant direct free kick.
It was a delight to watch Marna as despite being a men down, managed to pull back a goal through Nathan D’Souza’s clean placement.
Thereafter, Sanket Jotkar scored twice for YBT and Marna scored their second through Sadanand Dabolkar.
Five minutes into the second half, Marna’s Saideep Pomburphekar saw his efforts from close being saved by YBT’s custodian Jeet Gupta.
Marna were further reduced to nine men as their substitute goalkeeper Pushparaj Mandrekar was sent off for a challenge outside the penalty box on Sanket Jotkar.
As the match progressed, YBT’s Sanket Jotkar missed three sitters. However, they scored two more through Ramnath Dabolkar and Nestor Dias.
