VASCO: Minister for Forest and Environment Alina Saldanha on Tuesday inaugurated the 1.4-km stretch of road known as ‘Rei Paz’ (The Three Kings road) at Cuelim.
The road connecting the Cansaulim-Verna road to Borsulem-Cuelim, which is 3.8 metres wide, was tendered for Rs 82 lakh. The road will have box culverts and pipe culverts and will help farmers from the Schedule Tribe community to take mechanised power tillers, harvesters and other mechanical implements to the fields.
The traditional pathway is the trail through the paddy fields by which the Three Kings during the feast of Epiphany came on horseback to attend the feast mass at the Chapel of Nossa Senhora Dos Remedios, Cuelim, on January 6.
Saldanha, in her address to the villagers of Cuelim in the presence of Cansaulim Sarpanch Josita Cardozo and Deputy Sarpanch Baylon Gomes, stated that her late husband Matanhy Saldanha wanted to complete this internal road on priority and had listed it in his manifesto. “This will be the shortest route for the villagers of Cuelim to reach the commercial town Margao.”
She stated that her office has executed 15 planned PWD works and 25 non-planned PWD works during her tenure for the people of Cortalim constituency.
