MARGAO: St Anthony Sports Club, Assolda prevailed over St Rock Youth Club, Calata-Majorda 6-5 via the sudden death to lift 25th Super Soccer inter-village football tournament organized by United Boys of Dando, Colva, at St John the Baptist ground, Dando-Benaulim, on Sunday. The teams were locked goalless at the end of regulation period.
Initially, the match seemed to be bobbed down the midfield with neither side offering much penetration.
After the break, St Anthony enjoyed the better share of exchanges with their forwards showing urgency. The real chance came soon after resumption when Sunny Fernandes unleashed a stiff grounder which however, missed the mark narrowly.
In the penalty shoot-out, Joseph Fernandes, Sunny Fernandes, Socorro Fernandes, Vicky Fernandes and Jaison Fernandes found the mark for St Anthony while Sadiq Ahamed, Boventura Pacheco, Wellington Fernandes, and Naveen Mendes converted for St Rock.
In the sudden death, Francis Fernandes was successful for St Anthony while Neville Miranda failed to convert his spot-kick for Majorda.
St Anthony received Rs 30,000 and the trophy while St Rock took home Rs 20,000.
Individual prizes were awarded to Promising player of the tournament Socorro Fernandes of St Anthony SC, Assolda; Best goalkeeper of the final Conrad Fernandes of St Rock, Best defender of the final Neville Miranda of St Rock, Best midfielder of the final Jaison Dias of St Anthony, Best forward of the final Naveen Mendes of St Rock, Man-of-the-final Joseph Fernandes of St Anthony SC, Assolda.
Former PWD Minister Churchill Alemao was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of Maria Rebello, Zilla Parishad member and Cecille Rodrigues DID Mom’s runners-up and former footballer.
