A truck driver and a cleaner had a lucky escape, after a overloaded truck carrying furniture damaged power lines at the new bus stand at Shapur-Ponda on Wednesday at about 8.30 pm.
Irked with the incident, the residents deflated tyres of the truck (GA-06-T-9211) carrying furniture, after it damaged electricity cables at Shapur. The truck driver and cleaner were lucky to have escaped unhurt, as the power cables were detached from the electricity poles. Luckily, there was no passer-by at the time of the incident.
Residents from Shapur have demanded a stern action against the overloaded truck. The truck was alleged to have been carrying furniture beyond permissible limits, resulting in damage to power cables.
“Electricity lines have been damaged by such overloaded trucks on several occasions, leaving several houses in the dark,” claimed the villagers.
According to locals, furniture from a Bethora unit is brought to the new bus stand Ponda, from where the transporters overload the trucks and transport it to the designated locations.
“This mostly happens during night and transporters are not concerned of the public safety,” informed the residents.
“Due to overload, the electricity wires got damaged and henceforth we wont keep quite if such incidents continue,” warned the villagers.
“Overloading of trucks is a routine business here and authorities are least bothered. Luckily, those power lines didn’t fell on the truck or else something worst was evident,” said Nagesh Chari, garage owner, Shapur.
“The power cables had fallen on one of the houses at Shapur. It is high time that authorities look into the matter so that such incidences do not repeat in the future,” added Chari.
