PANJIM: After successful organs harvesting, the Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC) is now looking at achieving another milestone by upgrading its facilities to heart and liver transplants.
The government-run hospital is also working towards facilitating use of harvested organs for the patients within the State.

“We are looking at liver transplant and we have taken a consultant on board. We need a liver surgeon… one of our persons is trained in liver transplant and we are creating a department within a month or so…. Once the super specialty hospital is commission, we can go for heart transplant. Our cardiac team has said it is possible to commence the procedure with the new hospital block coming up,” Goa Medical College and Hospital Dean Shivanand Bandekar said at a press conference on Thursday.
On Monday, the GMC created history at State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO) Goa, as the doctors for the first time harvested organs from a 21-year-old brain-dead donor on Sunday night. It was the first ever attempt made by the GMC for organ donation and transplantation.
The donor’s heart, liver, lungs and two kidneys were donated to needy patients as SOTTO coordinates with Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (ROTTO), Maharashtra, which caters to the region comprising of five States — Goa, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
With the successful attempt, the GMC Dean stated that they are in a process to ensure harvested organs can be utilised within the State as well. As on date, around 100 persons have registered themselves with SOTTO for donating organs.
