“If you talk to aspirants of civil service examination, 90 percent will tell you that they want to change the way things are done,” Mohanan said addressing students at BITS Pilani’s Goa campus on the topic ‘Opportunities in Civil Services’.
“But one year into service you will realise that what you have been dreaming about is impractical. If you want to change then the dream collapses. But there comes a day that you realise that you are change agents,” she added.
Mohanan, IAS, of the AGMUT cadre, said that often the efforts that bureaucrats put in are not seen in the right perspective. “It’s not often that we get a chance to express what we are doing. Coming from the services we often don’t get a chance to talk about what we do or we intend to do,” Mohanan said.
“When we are talking about empowering others, we are talking about every section of society. No matter what you do there’s a scope to change the world,” she added.
The collector who has worked in Arunachal Pradesh and New Delhi said a career in the civil service empowers one to change.
Her counterpart in South Goa district Sachin Shinde said that after 75 years there has been a lot of change. “Civil service is the machinery which elected representatives use to implement various schemes,” Shinde said.
