MARGAO: Taking serious note of the O Heraldo report highlighting the illegal sand mining activity at Rachol, the Rachol Village Panchayat on Thursday filed a complaint before the Maina-Curtorim Police Station pertaining to alleged illegal activity in the village, demanding immediate action.
The complaint signed by Sarpanch Joseph Vaz states that to avoid the illegal activities and nuisance caused in the village necessary action is awaited.

It is pertinent to note that on O Heraldo in its edition dated November 9, had highlighted the illegal sand mining issue with the locals producing photographic evidence of the illegal
activity near the Rachol ferry point.
The sarpanch stated that the panchayat has not received any written complaint, however, relying on news report published in O Heraldo, the panchayat decided to file an immediate complaint to initiate needful action and bring the culprits to book.
The panchayat also submitted the copies of the complaint to the Deputy Superintendent of Police and the Salcete Block Development Office (BDO) on Thursday.
Earlier, Querobino Gomes, Rachol’s former sarpanch, besides a few villagers had claimed that the illegal sand mining activities has already damaged the riverine ecosystem very badly and it is a high time that action is initiated to stop further destruction.
The villagers alleged that these activities are carried out mostly at night.
