Lawyers to meet over evening court

MARGAO: City-based lawyers are up in arms over the government notification to start evening courts under the High Court order from 5.30 pm to 7.30 pm.

President of South Goa Advocates Association, Adv Rajiv Gomes strongly condemned the government notification and demanded its immediate withdrawal.
“We fail to understand the logic behind the notification. How can the government expect the lawyers to represent clients in the evening courts after slogging during the entire day? This cannot be accepted. After working hard from 9.30 am to 5.30 pm in the courts, lawyers will not get adequate time to meet the clients, do the drafting and present the case before the Judge,” Adv Gomes said.
He said the extra ordinary general body of the South Goa Advocates Association will be convened soon to take stock of the government notification and demand its withdrawal.
“We have received negative feedback to the notification from the lawyers’ fraternity. But, we will take a formal decision through the extra ordinary general body meeting to oppose the notification,” he said.
