PANJIM: Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday withdrew the orange alert of heavy to very heavy rainfall, stating that intermittent rainfall will occur at isolated places across the State.
The rainfall deficit is now come down to 14 percent with the total seasonal rainfall touching the 97.99 inch mark. As per data with IMD, Goa received 97.99 inches of rainfall from June 1 to September 21 against the average of 113.89 inches.
Speaking to Herald, MET-Goa, Director, ML Sahu said, “Rainfall has started diminishing slowly and as per the forecast we have withdrawn the orange alert of heavy to very heavy rainfall. Intermittent rainfall will occur at isolated places across Goa. Even the alert for fishermen has been withdrawn.”
Speaking on the deficit he said, “For the month of July, the State received 25 percent less rainfall and this is due to the reduced activeness of the offshore trough which in turn has resulted in less rainfall this year. Till today there is a deficit of 14 percent,” Sahu said.
He further said that the cumulative rainfall from June 1 to the present was 2,489 mm against the normal of 2,893 mm, which was 14 percent less than the normal rainfall.
“Light to moderate rain/thundershower is most likely to occur at most places over Goa during next two days and at a few subsequent places,” the IMD weather forecast states.
IMD on Thursday recorded temperatures of 28.3 degrees Celsius. The forecast for Panjim in the next 24 hours is cloudy skies with spells of rain/thundershowers and temperatures likely to be around 31 and 24 degrees Celsius.
