MARGAO: In an effort to revitalize agriculture in the state of Goa, a comprehensive Draft Agricultural policy with active engagement from the public is on the cards.
The policy aims to cater to the diverse needs of both large and small-scale farmers, as well as the agro-industrial sector, while considering the unique characteristics of Goa. The Director of Agriculture in Goa, Nevil Alphonso, recently interacted with the press in Margao, sharing insights into the policy’s development. He revealed that extensive public input has been sought to shape the policy. A remarkable 83 individuals have provided around 100 constructive suggestions to date.

The policy-making process in a smaller state like Goa prioritizes inclusivity and responsiveness to the diverse agricultural landscape. It is designed to ensure the welfare of farmers and the overall agricultural sector. After the initial draft of the agricultural policy is formulated, it will be disseminated to local panchayats for review and consideration by farmers and the wider public. Alphonso emphasized that the final policy will be crafted with careful consideration of the feedback and recommendations received from various stakeholders.
The key developments in Goa’s agricultural sector were discussed during this press interaction, where Director Alphonso also highlighted various agricultural innovations. One such innovation is the demonstration of a solar energy system for drying fish, as well as a grinding machine designed to separate waste from millets.
Furthermore, the event acknowledged and awarded certificates to participants of an agricultural training camp held at the Agricultural Science Center in Calconda. The camp aimed to equip individuals with skills and knowledge relevant to modern agricultural practices.
