Mapusa: Farmers in Pernem and Bardez are devastated due to the heavy damage caused to their fields and cultivated crops due to excessive and unseasonal rain.
What has been even more tragic is this is that it was concerning hundreds of hectares of agricultural land that was once barren
This year, a large number of youngsters, who were out of jobs due to the COVID pandemic, had joined hands with traditional farmers to recultivate these lands. However, the farmers have lamented that all their hard work has not resulted in great produce as anticipated due to the damage caused by rains. They added that they were also relying on the crops for self consumption as well. In Pernem alone, more than 65 hectares of land has been destroyed
Reacting to this development, Pernem Agriculture Zonal Officer Prasad Parab said, “There is a scheme under which the farmers can apply for compensation. Farmers must have Krushi cards and fill a form available at the zonal office along with photographs of their damaged crops. The officers will inspect the damaged land for further process. Many farmers have already approached our office in Pernem for compensation.”
