NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has dismissed a petition of Dattaram Premanand Gawas of Kumbharwada, Chandel in Pernem convicted for the murder of a woman on November 18, 2007.
He filed an appeal after the High Court of Bombay at Goa upheld the conviction by the Sessions Court in March 2010. The Bench of Justices A M Khanwilkar and L Nageshwara Rao found no fault in the High Court ruling and dismissed the petition.
The victim had gone to a stream half a km away from her house for washing clothes but didn’t return home and the search led to her body lying in the bushes on the bank of the stream at Devachi Panas.
The culprit was nabbed on the basis of the report to police by a person on what he heard while eavesdropping on three persons talking 20 days later on December 8, 2007 in Upper Bazar, Bedshi Market area at Dodamarg. He heard one of them bragging that he had killed a woman and hidden her gold ornaments.
The High Court had upheld the conviction on the ground that the witness withstood cross-examination and he had no reason to falsely implicate the convict.
