PANJIM: Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) on Wednesday termed the ban imposed by the State government on the import of fish in the State till the end of this month a ‘knee-jerk reaction’ and demanded that an attempt to murder case be booked against those applying formalin on fish.
GPCC also alleged that the 15-day ban on fish import was done fearing that their party MLAs would take the government to task during the Assembly session.
Addressing the media, GPCC spokesperson Agnelo Fernandes said, “The decision to ban import of fish for 15 days is taken so that our Congress MLAs do not take the State government to task during the Assembly session. An attempt to murder case should be booked against those applying formalin on fish.”
He added, “There was confusion prevailing over whether the fish inherently had formalin content or not. The step taken by the State government to ban fish imports had been taken to fool the people of Goa and can be called as a tiatr.”
He further said that the minister clearly says that formalin is inherent in fish whereas the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) Director says that it is within the permissible limits while on the other hand scientists claim that there cannot be formalin content in fish.
Meanwhile, the Congress Legislative Party on Tuesday demanded that the government appoint an inquiry commission under a retired judge to investigate into the formalin in fish issue.
