CANACONA: Jagruk Canconkars have threatened to stage a chain hunger strike at Canacona municipality building over the issue of the municipality’s failure to tackle the garbage within its jurisdiction.
Addressing the media at Chaudi on Thursday, Jack Fernandes and Sandesh Telekar, the signatories to the intimation submitted to the chief officer of Canacona municipality, said that the citizens of Canacona would sit on a chain hunger strike in the premises of Canacona municipality from June 18 to 20, from 9.30 am to 5.30 pm as the CMC has failed to take care of the garbage issue within its jurisdiction.
Samrat Bhagat, another office bearer of Jagruk Canconkars, said that if the authorities don’t take concrete steps and give in writing an assurance to resolve the garbage issue on priority, they would be constrained to go on an indefinite chain hunger strike from June 21.
The activists said that they have submitted a written complaint to the health officer of Canacona health centre about the unhygienic state of the fish market at Chaudi in Canacona and garbage treatment plant located at Dumane.
When contacted, Municipal Chairperson Chaya Soiru Komarpant said that she has taken the charge as chairperson only a couple of weeks back and when the garbage issue was brought to her notice she quickly acted and intimated the chief officer of the difficulties in handling the garbage from the municipal area,
“There was an issue at the garbage treatment plant and since Wednesday we have tackled most of the issues and the door to door garbage collection and transportation to garbage treatment plant at Dumane is done on a daily basis,” she said.
