A look at the crime figures of 16 police stations in South Goa for the first quarter of the current calendar year indicates that major crimes have dipped and the police have improved the crime detection. There has been a decline in heinous crimes too during the past three months. While four murder cases were reported and detected in South Goa this year, last year during the same period six murders were reported and detected. While there was one attempt to murder reported and detected this year, last year there were three attempts to murder reported and detected. While one case of culpable homicide has been registered and detected this year, last year there were none. And as against the nine rape cases reported and detected this year, there were 14 rape cases reported and detected last during the same period. Amongst other cases, while 14 house breaking theft cases at night were registered last year as well as this year, only three were detected last year, while this year seven have been detected. This year 14 of the 17 other theft cases registered were detected while last year only nine of the 15 registered cases were reported. There has been a drop in accident cases too during the past three months. While last year 34 fatal accident cases were registered of which 28 were detected, this year 29 such cases are registered and 27 of them have been detected. Similarly while 73 other accident cases were registered last year of which 71 were detected, this year 60 other accidents are registered of which 59 are detected. While during the current year altogether 282 cases were registered under the Indian Penal Code of which 245 were detected, last year during the same period 375 such cases were registered and 311 of them were detected. While last year the crime detection rate of the police in South Goa stood at 82.93 per cent, it has climbed up marginally to 86.88 per cent this year.
