PONDA: Male dominance at the Bhoma-Adkon Panchayat in Priol constituency is likely to come to an end as the two woman panchas have managed to get two of the five male panchas to their side.
The sarpancha’s post at this panchayat has been reserved for women, but till date, for almost two and a half years since the panchayat elections, all attempts by the lady panchas to occupy the post have been scuttled by the men.
The five male panchas had not allowed either of the two lady panchas to become sarpanchas for the last two-and-half years since the passing of a no-confidence motion against former sarpanch Varsha Naik. She held the post for just two months after the panchayat election.
However, now two male panchas of the five, who were in the ruling group and controlling the panchayat by holding charge with male deputy sarpanch have joined hands with the two women panchas. The four panchas who have moved a no-confidence motion against Deputy Sarpanch Damodar Naik are Sunil Jalmi, Dharma Bhomkar, Mahima Naik and Varsha Naik.
Addressing media, the two women panchas, Mahima Naik and Varsha Naik, along with Panch Sunil Jalmi said: “We were denied the post of sarpanch, but now the situation has changed and we hope the post will be held by one of us, as it is reserved for women.”
Jalmi said there is a BJP-MGP government in the State and with the alliance and support of the government they will bring development in the village.
