MARGAO: A team of over 15 police personnel from Cuncolim, led by Inspector Diago Gracias and accompanied by PSI Kavita Rawat, visited the family of late Constable Shailesh Gaonkar in Ghodke-Balli to pay tribute to the fallen officer on Police Commemoration Day.
Shailesh Gaonkar, 30, was killed while on duty during a tragic incident on January 16, 2022. He, along with Constable Vishwas Deykar, 32, were involved in a fatal accident while performing nakabandi (checkpoint) duty in preparation for the 2022 Assembly elections.

The accident occurred near Dholio Service Station, Mungul-Seraulim junction, when a speeding car, driven by 31-year-old Craig Rodrigues, struck a police check post, knocking down both constables and injuring them severely. Shailesh Gaonkar died on the spot, while Vishwas Deykar succumbed to his injuries en route to the Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) at Bambolim.
Constable Shailesh Gaonkar had been stationed at the Colva Police Station for more than five years and was recently married. At the time of his passing, his wife was pregnant. Vishwas Deykar served as an IRB constable and had joined the Colva Police Station a few days before the tragic accident.
