PANJIM: Unknown persons on Tuesday night sneaked in and stole cash amounting to approximately Rs 6 lakh from the treasury of Goa Medical College (GMC).
According to Agassaim Police officials, the control room received a call from the Joint Secretary of Accounts (GMC) that when the office was opened on Wednesday morning at 9.30 am, the cashier found that the collapsible gate lock was broken and that cash was missing from the treasury. The cashier immediately contacted Joint Accounts Director Sunita Marathe about the theft.
According to the Police, Marathe claims that the lock was proper when the staff left and the office was closed on Tuesday evening, alleging that the theft might have occurred during the night.
“The formal written complaint from the complainant Sunita Marathe, came to the police station at around 7.55 pm through proper channel and coordination from the GMC Dean. The complaint filing process was delayed as the accounts section wanted to know the amount that had been stolen,” PSI Ashish Parab said.
He said the police have asked for CCTV footage from the surrounding areas as there were no CCTVs installed in GMC and staff and security guards were being questioned at GMC. Police said that aside from the lock of the collapsible gate, the wooden door was not damaged and that the keys to the treasury were kept in the room itself.
