MAPUSA: Salgaocar Football Club registered a 2-0 win over FC Goa in the inaugural match of the SELVEL Goa Professional League, at Duler stadium, here, on Wednesday.
Vice President Lavinio Rebello was the match announcer and hosted the GFA’s First Pro League match of the season.
The Green Brigade struck a goal in each session of play through Saeesh Miranda(38th min) from the penalty spot while substitute Stephen Satarkar secured the win in the 90th minute.
The Young Gaurs came up with just one good attack at the rival goal in the eighth minute where a fine floater by Brison Fernandes saw Vasim Inamdar break the off-side trap but before he could strike the ball past Salgaocar keeper Jason D’Mello, U-20 defender Perry Pereira cleared the ball for a corner.
Play was then mostly restricted to midfield for the next half an hour which came to live only in the 38th minute.
A cross from the right flank by Perry Pereira who moved upfront met Young Gaurs right back Malsawmtluanga who handled the ball just inside the penalty box prompting referee David D’Mello to point to the dreaded spot.
Saeesh Miranda stepped forward and scored to the left of rival keeper Antonio Da Silva to give his side the lead.
The Green Brigade almost scored their second goal just two minutes later but a fierce shot at the first post by striker Stelon D’Costa was smartly blocked by keeper Antonio which travelled to Valentinho Nazareth who failed to guide the ball into the net.
On crossing ends, once again the teams played at a slow pace which came into life in the last ten minutes of the regulation time.
In the 81st and 89th minutes, placements by Salgaocar’s Selwyn Miranda missed the target narrowly.
However, finally in the 90th minute, Salgaocar doubled their lead when a chip at the goal by substitute Stephen Satarkar brushed Sarineo’s shoulder to find the ball and land into the far corner of the goal to make it 2-0.
