Vegetable vendors selling their produce opposite the Margao Police Station have alleged that a sopo contractor is demanding additional money from them over and above the prescribed sopo charges.
The vendors claimed that the sopo collector told them they would have to pay extra if they sold mushrooms and nirpans, and allegedly threatened to seize their goods if they failed to make the additional payment.
Questioning the alleged demand, the vendors said they are already paying the prescribed sopo charges and sought clarification on the sudden introduction of an additional fee.
They alleged that the demand for extra money amounts to harassment and is placing an added burden on small vendors who depend on daily sales for their livelihood.
The vendors have urged the concerned authorities to investigate the allegations and take appropriate action if the claims against the contractor are found to be true.
