PANJIM: With the chants of Ganapati Bappa morya, pudhchya varshi lavkar ya, thousands of families on Saturday evening took part in processions to bid adieu to Lord Ganesh on the second day of Ganesh Chaturthi, even as sarvajanik mandals across the State will celebrate the festival for a longer period.
According to Hindu calendar, this popular festival is celebrated in the month of Bhadrapad and celebration days vary from one and half day to 21 days.
Earlier, the bhats (Hindu priests) were kept busy with aartis and uttar puja, after which the idol of Lord Ganesh was taken out in procession to the immersion points. Panjim saw people carrying their idols to some traditional Ganesh visarjan (immersion) points at the ferry wharf, Miramar sea front, Mala and Patto.
A few idols were immersed in the evening, while many waited till late into the night to immerse the idols, as chants to Lord Ganesha were heard late into the night from across the river Mandovi even as the idols of the Lord of Wisdom were taken out in colourful processions.
Police personnel, along with para-military forces on election duty, were deployed at various immersion points in Panjim as well as strategic locations in the State to avoid any untoward incidents.
